The Rules of Brännboll

There are many rules in brännboll, much like many other games. However, a few of the rules are listed below:

  • The game is usually played with seven people from each team on the field.

  • The boundaries can be made based on where someone is playing, but restrictions on how widely the batter can hit are normally put in place.

  • Once the batsman successfully hits the ball, he/she drops the bat and makes their way around the four bases, usually counter-clockwise. Meanwhile, the catching team is trying to get the ball to the catcher on the outing base.

  • The catcher announces the end of the round by yelling “out” when he/she makes contact with the outing base while holding the ball.

  • If a player is caught between two bases when the round is called “out”, they go back to the base they previously visited and the catching team gains a point.

  • The batsman is given three attempts to hit the ball. If unsuccessful on the last try, he/she moves to the first base and runs when the next batsman hits a valid hit.

  • There are no restrictions on the number of people on a base at a time. If all players on the batting team are unable to get to the fourth base and there are no players remaining to bat in line, then the catching team switches to batting.

  • Each team gets to play both sides (batting and catching) one or two times.

  • There is also a penalty system. If the team that commits the penalty receives a warning for:

    • The first time, they receive a warning.

    • The second time, they receive five penalty points.

    • The third time, they receive ten penalty points.

    • The fourth time, they are disqualified and the opponent team wins.

  • The scoring system designates:

    • Six points for a home run.

    • One point for the catching team when a player is caught “out”.

    • One point for the catching team if they catch a fly ball (catching the ball before it hits the ground).

This is a diagram of what the set-up for the game should look like.
